Lauren’s story

"Attitudes need to change. All we want is to be given a chance."

People with visual impairments are more likely to be unemployed. I was unemployed for 8 months and I remember feeling at times that I was never going to get a job and feeling pretty useless.

However, I realised that I was disabled far more by society’s view of disability than my actual impairment. I was determined to change this.

People often don’t look beyond a person’s impairment and focus on their limitations rather than the unique advantages and possible opportunities employing a disabled person could offer them.

Disabled people are usually resourceful, determined and want to work and contribute.

Lauren's story

It’s time that there was more awareness about disabled people in the work place. We shouldn’t be overlooked just because we’re disabled.

Disabled people face barriers left, right and centre. I want to contribute just as much as anyone else. It doesn’t have to cost an employer a lot to make the reasonable adjustments a disabled person needs.

Attitudes need to change. All we want is to be given a chance.
